How to choose an award-wining gift this Father’s Day

Wine is bottled poetry”
Robert Louis Stevenson

It’s also much better than socks or ties when it comes to choosing a gift that you can share with your dad on Father’s Day – in fact, in most cases, wine is a perfect gift for most wine-loving adults for any occasion. So, here’s some tips to make the best selection for your dad or for whoever is the lucky recipient of your generosity.

Beat your budget

There are great wine options available at all price points, so once you know how much you want to spend you can really have some fun.  Try to find a wine that looks the part without breaking the bank, and one that is perhaps an interesting, less obvious choice of style or variety. For the serious wine lover or to really spoil someone, the sky’s the limit. Check out the wine critic reviews and scores (anything over 90 is a good bet – like the wines in this collection) – there are some amazing drops at all price points.

It’s all about occasion

These tips extend beyond a gift for dad. Are you buying wine to take to a meal or party? Consider the food being served, if possible, and the mood of the event. A poolside barbecue will call for a different style of wine than a formal dinner with your partner’s relatives. A celebratory occasion might best be matched with a sparkling wine for that little extra pizzazz. And consider whether you think the wine will be drunk soon or cellared. This can also affect your choice of style, colour or variety. But whatever you choose, no matter the price, make it a sense of occasion in the way you give it.

Consider what they like

Try to select wines based on what you know they like, rather than what you like. If they love sweet and bubbly Moscatos but you’re a diehard red drinker, a Barossa Shiraz might not be the best choice, even if you’re secretly dying for them to see the light or hope they’ll crack it open with you. If you’re not sure what they like, do your best, and have a little fun by trying to match the wine to their personality. And try to avoid gender generalisations. If you’re unsure, a gift voucher to a favourite cellar door or wine plan membership is also a way to get them more involved in discovering new wines.
