Bin 8 has been crafted in the traditional Penfolds style. Ripe, balanced fruit flavours are supported by softly integrated oak, resulting in an impressive, smooth red wine. It was introduced in response to a heightened interest in Shiraz and Cabernet blends, a classic Australian wine style. Although Bin numbers were originally named after the original Bin location after bottling, Bin 8 was given its number because it uses older oak that was previously used for Bins 128, 28, and 389, with the number 8 providing the common thread.
An expressive aromatic profile. Spearmint and goji berry lead, interwoven with cinnamon, nutmeg, star anise and hints of Chinese five spice. Liquorice allsorts and forest floor notes add intrigue, while blue fruits, chocolate mint and dark cocoa provide depth and richness.
Medium-bodied and neatly framed. A gentle sugar-dusting sweetness is balanced by mouth-watering acidity, driving a juicy, energetic palate. Flavours of blueberry Danish, cinnamon bun and nutmeg unfold, layered with brown spice, dark plum and a subtle cedary oak influence. Plush yet composed, with a persistent, spice-laced finish.

The 2024 growing season across South Australia was characterised by a warm, even ripening period following a relatively dry winter and spring, resulting in modest yields and strong fruit concentration. Mild flowering supported good fruit set, while a warm but rarely extreme summer allowed steady flavour accumulation and preserved natural acidity. Harvest was slightly compressed, requiring careful picking to capture freshness and varietal definition. Regional highlights show subtle nuance. Padthaway delivered generous aromatics and bright acidity, with reds showing clarity and lift. McLaren Vale produced plush, opulent fruit profiles, particularly for Shiraz, with supple tannins and approachability. The Barossa Valley saw lower yields but excellent concentration, with structured wines and classic dark fruit intensity balanced by freshness. Coonawarra’s maritime influence ensured even ripening, preserving acidity and varietal precision, with Cabernet Sauvignon showing hallmark cassis and fine tannins. In Robe, cooling coastal breezes supported aromatic purity and vibrant acidity, favouring elegant, medium-weight styles. Overall, 2024 was a vintage of approachability and balance, with regional typicity clearly expressed across South Australia.
