Since its inception, Penfolds Koonunga Hill has delivered quality, value and consistency. The original 1976 Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet is a legendary wine that is still drinking well today. A perennial favourite at Penfolds Re-corking Clinics and at auction, collectors value its quality and longevity. Koonunga Hill Seventy Six is a multi regional South Australian blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine style that has played a pivotal role in Australia’s rich winemaking history.
The bouquet reveals an evocative blend of cola and sweet sarsaparilla, subtly underscored by creamy inflections of American oak. A savoury array of dried herbs, including fragrant oregano and a hint of tomato leaf, emerges, accompanied by enticing touches of sopressa salumi and briny green olives.
The palate displays an interplay of savoury nuances and vibrant fruit characters. Pink peppercorn adds a gentle spice alongside juicy notes of dark berries and succulent pomegranate, creating a balance of richness and freshness. Red briar bramble subtly entwines with the savouriness of bay leaf and a supple, velvety texture, leaving a finish that lingers with delicately integrated tannins and soft finesse. A wine of charm and versatility, ideal for enjoying now but with the structure to reward those who wait to uncover its further potential.

Winter rainfall exceeded the average, primarily due to significant falls in June and July. Although August and September saw below-average rain, soil moisture levels were ideal for a successful budburst. Late spring in South Australia brought a series of low-pressure systems, delivering substantial rain. The season overall was notably cool, which delayed harvest by several weeks. This extended hang-time allowed the grapes to develop beautifully distinct varietal characters.
Key to the success of Penfolds has been a lineage of visionary winemakers. There have only ever been four Chief Winemakers at the helm of Penfolds – Max Schubert, Don Ditter, John Duval and Peter Gago, each a custodian of a rich winemaking tradition that goes back for more than 170 years.
