Overview

Overview

Wynns Coonawarra Estate was founded by pioneer John Riddoch who planted vineyards in 1891, recognising the potential of the rich, red terra rossa soil and the long ripening season of Coonawarra's cool southerly climate.

Each vintage Wynns select a premium parcel from a single vineyard to bottle separately. The 2019 single vineyard wine for Wynns is from the Davis vineyard in the heart of Coonawarra, just south of Wynns winery on Redman avenue.

Named after William Davis, son of local Joseph Davis and Sarah Sharam, Davis is one of the oldest Cabernet blocks in Coonawarra. At only 2.5 hectare, this block was planted by Wynns as a non-clonal selection on own roots in 1957 and the only older Wynns Cabernet is the Johnson Block which is located immediately to the north of Davis.

Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion

"The last bottling of wine from the Davis vineyard was in 2008. The aromas here are impossibly bright and deep. Blackberry and raspberry, blood and ferrous, creamy blackberry pie – crust as well. The acidity is saline and fresh. This is astoundingly beautiful. Driven by fruit and powered by a thundering undercurrent of soft tannin, this will surely live into its 3rd decade with ease, and likely still retain some of the vibrancy. Inchoate though it is, a star is on the rise." Erin Larkin

Andrew Caillard MW, The Vintage Journal

"Deep crimson. Intense cassis, dark chocolate, hint espresso aromas with inky, leafy notes. Well balanced wine with pure blackcurrant, mocha flavours, fine chewy firm textures, attractive mid-palate richness and well-integrated savoury oak notes. Finishes claret firm and long with some leafy notes. Impressive definition, presence and torque. 14 months in new (16%) and seasoned French oak barriques (90%) and hogsheads (10%) Drink now – 2036 13.8% alc 96 points" Andrew Caillard MW

Campbell Mattinson, The Winefront

"Coonawarra and cabernet. What a combination. This is a wonderful cabernet, fine and fruity yet tannic too, all the flavours and components then lingering as it draws out through the finish. Boysenberry, blackcurrant, a touch of iodine, purple flowers and a lick of smoky, cedarwood oak. You have to love the tannin structure here; it’s an assertive murmur, somehow, controlling the shape of the wine in a nudging kind of way. This is a ‘Claret++ style’ of cabernet, with emphasis on the ++. It’s going to mature majestically." Campbell Mattinson

Flavours and Palate

The 2019 Davis moves effortlessly through the palate; intense cassis with mint. The fine powdery tannins will need time to integrate with the intense fruit.

Coonawarra, South Australia

Coonawarra, on South Australia’s Limestone Coast, is a flat, isolated region almost mid-point between Adelaide and Melbourne. The area enjoys a cool maritime climate - similar to that of Bordeaux - and is renowned for its unique terra rossa soil. Rich, rust coloured soils… crimson sunburnt faces… magenta sunsets: this is red wine country! While Coonawarra is famous for its rich, minty Cabernet, the area also produces Shiraz and Merlot and surprisingly good Chardonnay and Riesling.

Whilst Coonawarra received adequate winter rains leading into the growing season, judicious irrigation from the Limestone aquifer was important in maintaining soil moisture levels at flowering and set. The 2019 growing season was cooler than 2018 and more closely aligned to long-term weather data. Vines canopies remained in excellent condition through to the end of harvest; significantly benefiting from the typically cool nights created by the Southern Ocean. Picking dates were also close to long term average. 2019 was an excellent, classic Wynns vintage – medium bodied.

Sue Hodder - Senior Winemaker

Sue Hodder is one of Australia’s best-known winemakers and this year celebrates her 27th vintage with Wynns – making wine from wonderful, expressive fruit grown in the heart of the terra rossa. Sue commenced her career as a viticulturist and believes her early viticultural training – assessing vines, analysing mature fruit and tasting the finished wine – gave her an invaluable insight into the importance of the vineyard in quality winemaking.

Sue brings valuable experience with vintages in other noted wine regions around the world and has judged extensively in Regional, National and International wine shows. She is the recipient of many accolades including GT Wines ‘Winemaker of the Year’ in 2010 (with viticulturist Allen Jenkins); and most recently ‘Winemaker of the Year’ (with Sarah Pidgeon) at the 2016 ASVO awards.
