Overview

Overview

The Cabernet vineyards from V&A Lane have long been looked to for their depth and character as important contributors to Wynns top wines. The inspiration for the V&A Lane Cabernet Shiraz comes from the Wynns ‘claret story’ that goes back to the 1950s, where wines were made to a style rather than being about exact proportions. For this modern version, the grapes are harvested on the same day and then co-fermented.

"This and the V&A Lane shiraz are treated with kid gloves by winemaker Sarah Pidgeon – in the vineyard and winery. These parcels are co-fermented, 2 varieties that usually ripen at different times, so you really need to know your site. Taking inspiration from the lighter clarets made in the 1950s and ‘60s, this modern version's beat is all savoury, with juniper, licorice root and fennel. It's medium bodied (just) and the tannins are gossamer-fine, yet spun together to a gentle hold. Compelling wine." - Jane Faulkner

"V & A Lane cabernet shiraz is warming to its task a lot faster than its shiraz sibling. Are we to take it that it’s the cabernet fulfilling its role and a little more?

Cabernet certainly is taking the lead here in more ways than one. The grape represents 58% of the blend and was co-fermented with its partner which might explain the warm relationship enjoyed which allows cabernet to roam a little further out, exploring and taking as its own some lovely and more immediate fruit territory. Blackcurrant, vanilla, leafy herbals, earth, leather combine. That shiraz tannin back beat so evident in the V & A Lane shiraz then comes into play, not loudly but the accent is there directing a firm tannic structure." - Jeni Port

"This wine is sourced from vineyards along V & A Lane , the cabernet having gone into many of Wynns’ top wines over the years while the shiraz is proven by the quality of its sibling varietal iteration. Together they strike up a close bond that is almost secretive in the glass and needs teasing out with time and patience. The blend is synergistic rather than being a twosome, mint notes typical of the region adding their own sheen to the wine’s personality. Give this time, in a decanter now or the cellar for 5-10 years and more." - Tony Love

Nose

Mulberry, blackberry and blood orange with subtle nutty and black spice notes.

Flavours and Palate

Co-fermentation of the two varieties creates a layered and harmonious style, with unique tannin structure. Extra time on skins after ferment takes the naturally rich fruit into savoury and complex territory. Dark brambly fruits are layered with black tea, aniseed and peppery spices. Velvety tannin creates depth and is defined by crisp acidity and beautiful line, leaving the palate full and long with a smoky gravelly finish.

Coonawarra, South Australia

Coonawarra, on South Australia’s Limestone Coast, is a flat, isolated region almost mid-point between Adelaide and Melbourne. The area enjoys a cool maritime climate - similar to that of Bordeaux - and is renowned for its unique terra rossa soil. Rich, rust coloured soils… crimson sunburnt faces… magenta sunsets: this is red wine country! While Coonawarra is famous for its rich, minty Cabernet, the area also produces Shiraz and Merlot and surprisingly good Chardonnay and Riesling.

Sarah Pidgeon - Winemaker

In 1998 Sarah was appointed winemaker at the renowned Wynns Coonawarra Estate winery. Here she feels privileged to continue the tradition of excellence and innovation, working with fruit from some of Australia’s top vineyards on the internationally famed terra rossa soil.
A love of well cellared, mature wines has been cultivated through her custodianship of the precious Wynns Museum Release wines. An intense knowledge of the terroir of Coonawarra vineyards, and great skill with coaxing the best from old vine Cabernets are among her constant rewards.
Questioning and challenging are important to ensuring a healthy future for Wynns and to this end Sarah has contributed to many important trials including development of a rigorous oak selection programme, and other technical trials for the winery.
A graduate of the prestigious Len Evans Wine Tutorial, her recent judging experience spans a decade at both regional and national shows.
