If you prefer your wine tastings in a more historical context, then Seppelt Great Western is the Cellar Door for you. It’s a comfortable 2.5-to-3-hour drive from Melbourne to the small (pop: 644 give or take) Grampians town of Great Western, where in 1865, Joseph Best established his winery. (It wouldn’t come into Seppelt’s hands until 1918.) With the goldrush in decline, Joseph cannily engaged out-of-work miners to hand-hew – from granite – its enormous underground cellars for wine storage. As Seppelt site manager, Mark Kindred , recently pointed out to WineDown, the reminders of their toil are still evident - with pick marks clearly visible on the walls. These are the famous Drives – and no visit to Seppelt Great Western would be complete without a thorough exploration of these fascinating and evocative tunnels.
