The 50 Year Old Rare Tawny is a symbol of Penfolds heritage, typifying collaboration and shared creative expression.
Amongst the many individual components captured in this wine is the 1915 vintage, reported to be the foundation of the first Grandfather cask. Additionally, the 1940, 1945 vintages, the first two commercial releases of the Grandfather (in 1965 and 1969 respectively) and the first Great Grandfather release (1994). Incorporating the 1915 vintage component from Penfolds precious glass stock reserves means the Penfold 50 Year Old Rare Tawny carries a generic connection to the earliest recorded vintage of Penfolds Grandfather Tawny.
Only 330 bottles are released in each series. This series 6 was released in 2022.

"The wine is drawn from a span of vintages ranging across roughly 100 years; the average age of the wine is 50 years. The quality is quite ridiculously good. Yes, to fabulous intensity and yes to a complex array of flavours, but that everlasting linger of flavour to the finish is a blaze of glory if ever there was one. Spicy and intensely sweet, aged and fresh all at once. Mind-blowing. 99 Points."
"Full amber/tawny colour with yellow-green rim. The bouquet is matchlessly complex and multi-faceted, yet with great freshness. Walnuts, dried fruits, old leather armchairs, a wine of enormous complexity and charm. Amazing power and richness, very sweet but also wonderful rancio and acidity drying the finish. Marvellous balance and persistence. A great fortified wine. 98 Points."
Vibrant and fresh, intensely complex and Christmas pudding elements all with vanillin, burnt toffee, dark chocolate seamlessly integrated.
Home to the oldest vines in the country, and no less than 18 wine growing regions, South Australia accounts for almost 50% of Australia’s wine production. The Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek and Coonawarra are well known for their world class reds, with Adelaide Hills, Clare Valley and Eden Valley praised for their exceptional Chardonnay and Riesling.
Sourced from specifically selected vineyards identified for producing fruit with the characteristics required to produce wines that can successfully undergo the fifty-plus years maturation in old seasoned oak.
The 1915 component, after barrel maturation was glass-aged in half-gallon flagons. Vintage components also include 1940, 1945 and various vintages and blends from the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, including 1959 to 1962, 1971, 1974 and 1987.
Key to the success of Penfolds has been a lineage of visionary winemakers. There have only ever been four Chief Winemakers at the helm of Penfolds – Max Schubert, Don Ditter, John Duval and Peter Gago, each a custodian of a rich winemaking tradition that goes back for more than 170 years.
Our current Penfolds winemaking team has more than 100 years between them as Penfolds winemakers. They are constantly refining and improving their work, whilst honouring the winemaking techniques of their predecessors.
