Overview

Overview

Each year fruit for Bin 138 is sourced from Barossa Valley vines and then matured in seasoned and a small proportion of new oak hogsheads to allow the different varietals to shine through. The exceptional 2021 vintage marks a return to the grenache varietal dominating the blend, with shiraz and mataro in support. An aromatic, approachable wine that offers great versatility with a wide selection of cuisines, including grilled red meats, Italian sausage and antipasto.

Ken Gargett

"The colour is a vibrant deep purple and there is an utterly gorgeous nose with depth and early complexity. Blackcurrants, black cherries, warm earth, mocha, new leather, violets and spices, this is taut, balanced, seamless and seductive. Arabica coffee bean notes emerge on the palate, along with a hint of a bitter almond character on the finish."

Tyson Stelzer

"Penfolds blends Bin 138 just before bottling rather than maturing in barrel ‘as grenache can either rise of fall in barrel!’ The cool 2021 season has set off Barossa grenache with delightful fragrance and exciting, vibrant acid drive, wonderfully enlarged with the depth, structure and black fruit presence of shiraz and mataro. Dark chocolate oak provides wellexecuted support, setting off a frame of firm, fine-grained tannins for the long-haul. One of the greatest Bin 138s yet."

Ray Jordan

"In good years this wonderful blend from the Barossa excels. This was a very good Barossa vintage, and it contributes to a bright, high energy wine bursting with vibrant red fruit dominated characters. A classic combination and consistently one of the best value wines in the Penfolds portfolio. Has so much happening from the first intake on the nose. Red berry, spices and cracked black pepper with a trace of balsamic. The palate is smooth and seamless integrated with a fine but firm thread of tannin."

Taste Description

Taste Description

Nose

Grenache fruits to the fore. A swirl and a sniff are enough to provide a metaphorical trip to the Arabian spice souk. Whole pimento, fenugreek, pink peppercorns, anise and musk. There is a lovely lift, with notes of cola, balsamic glazed ham, poached quince, sloe berry and Campari. German schwarzwälder (gâteau) cake. On further inspection, there is a mouthwatering savoury tea-smoked duck aromatic.

Flavours and Palate

All three varietals play a complementary role. There is a lovely juby fruit like flavour profile, not over-ripe in the least. Exotic black and red fruits abound: lingonberries, logan berries, olallieberries, red currants. Green tomato salsa and lemon myrtle olives add a savoury dimension. The acidity is taught and bright, while the tannins are very fine. The wine has a lovely structure and is already drinking beautifully. Offers plenty of versatility for food pairing.

Vintage Conditions

Winter rainfall was 20% below the long-term average primarily due to low rainfall experienced in the month of July. However, a wetter than average August contributed to healthy soil moisture profiles for the commencement of the growing season. Spring temperatures were slightly warmer than average with excellent climatic conditions for budburst and flowering. The mild conditions made for an orderly harvest, with each varietal ripening with optimal flavour, tannin and acid profiles. An excellent vintage for the Barossa Valley.
