Andrew Caillard MW

"Beautifully concentrated wine with complex dark chocolate, blackberry, espresso flavours, fine grainy/ graphite tannins and well-integrated mocha, marzipan oak notes, Finishes cedar firm and minerally. Still oak dominant but well matched to the fruit density. Should develop very well.

Ken Gargett

"A sub-regional red here, with Marananga being quintessential Barossa for many. A blend of Shiraz which saw eighteen months in French (29% new) and American oak (also 29% new), from a mix of hogsheads and large puncheons. Equals any Bin 150 yet released. Dark purple/maroon hue, there is a wonderful nose here – intense, concentrated and yet immaculately balanced. Notes of plums, quality dark chocolate, black fruits, blueberries, leather, cocoa powder, warm earth, tobacco leaves and bergamot – amazing early complexity. Silky tannins and great length, there is a fine acid/tannin balance with the intensity never wavering. – 96 points"

Ray Jordan

"I have been an unabashed fan of this wine since its inception. Has such a distinctive regional character with the ferruginous ironstone influence of Marananga. A real cacophony of aromas sing from the nose while the palate is layered with so many subtleties, twists and turns. Has a creamy rich and almost liqueur cherry and crème brulee thing. Plush and long with that minerally ironstone tannin drive carrying through to the long finish. Cellar: 25 years. 14.5% alc – 96 points"

Taste Description

Taste Description

Nose

A generous decant is encouraged to let the aromatic unfurl. First noted are the dark, purple fruits. Fresh satsuma plums and blackcurrant, with sweet notes of cinnamon fruit bun. Preserved plum jam and quince paste aromatics add to the allure. There are exotic notes from the spice cupboard: juniper berries, dried rosemary, sweet paprika and bay leaves... aromatics redolent of Spanish tapas: patatas bravas, duck paté and cured jamon. A hydrocarbon/coal dust note provides a regional cue, infused by ironstone/limestone minerality.

Flavours and Palate

A beautifully balanced wine. Sweet and savoury nuances in perfect yin and yang. First admired, sweet/tart plum succulence. Crème brûlée and pannacotta creaminess add weight to the palate. Childhood memories of humbug confectionery are easily evoked. The tannins are fine and chalky, perhaps influenced by Marananga’s ironstone and limestone rich soils. Minerality is apparent, with a fine steely, cranberry like acidity holding court.

Map of South Australia

Barossa Valley, South Australia

Just one hour’s drive from South Australia’s capital, Adelaide, lies its gourmet capital (and wine Mecca), Barossa. One of the country’s most beautiful and historic wine regions, Barossa is a magnet for lovers of fine food and wine. Its classic Mediterranean climate, and free-draining red brown soils, makes the region ideal for growing grapes. Barossa produces excellent Shiraz, Cabernet, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Riesling and Semillon.

Vintage Conditions

Spring temperatures were slightly warmer than average with excellent climactic conditions for budburst and flowering. Apart from a few wet days in early February, the predicted La Niña failed to impact the Barossa Valley in any significant way. The temperatures from January to March were like the long-term average, with February slightly cooler. The mild conditions made for an orderly harvest, with shiraz grapes exhibiting strong varietal typicity. An excellent vintage for the Barossa Valley.
