Overview

Overview

Bin 600 is intrinsically linked to Penfolds beginning in California, a narrative that now spans three decades. In 1998, Penfolds imported a heritage selection of vine cuttings from South Australia’s esteemed Kalimna and Magill Estate vineyards and planted them in Californian soil. The original name of the Camatta Hills vineyard was called Creston “600” Ranch, a special place in the Penfolds California timeline for it serves as a reference point to the start of our American journey. Creston Ranch is now honoured in the wine’s name, Bin 600. In recognition of Penfolds history within our Californian wine story, grapes from the original 1998 vine cuttings feature in this cabernet shiraz blend. A blend that has been revered and championed by Penfolds in our modern winemaking era.

Tyson Stelzer

"Penfolds has done a daring thing in transposing the definitive Australian blend to the Napa and this is an exemplary declaration of its success, and the finest yet. A core of cabernet blackcurrants is well backed by the glossy blackberries of shiraz, confidently framed in layers of dark and milk chocolate American oak and the rigid tannin framework that declares Penfolds. Deep, dark and enduring, it delivers a quintessential expression of Penfolds with all the grandeur of the Napa. 96 Points."

Taste Description

Taste Description

Nose

A nose that immediately seduces. Initial scents of steamed fig/treacle pudding which transition into fragrant roses. This floral note then entwines with the warm, buttery aroma of French pastries – freshly baked brioche and blueberry danish. The core fruits of boysenberry meld with the innate characters of Cabernet and Shiraz. A savoury complexity emerges through pepper crusted ham and pastrami, while green peppercorns provide a fresh, spicy lift.

Flavours and Palate

On tasting, the palate reveals itself to be both creamy and soft, with bright fruits that promise immediate gratification. This wine exhibits lovely drinkability; it's balanced and fine-tuned. Cherry Ripe unfurls across the tongue, followed by a nod to strawberries and cream sweets.

Vintage Conditions

The 2021 growing season in Napa Valley delivered exceptionally high-quality fruit, producing some of the best in recent years. Early winter rain led to minimal precipitation for the remainder of the season, providing an ideal environment for grape development with budbreak early in April and flowering in May. The summer provided early and even ripening, with veraison beginning in early July. Low yields, partly due to drought conditions, created intensely flavoured fruit and smaller berry size. The moderate weather allowed for long, even ripening and our winemakers took their time bringing in grapes. This extended season crafted wines with unprecedented colour extraction, aromatic intensity, and structure that are equally lush, and fruit driven. In Paso Robles, the 2021 vintage is being celebrated as one of the most exceptional in years. Characterised by a blend of warm and cool weather, the season facilitated extended grape maturation while preserving acidity and freshness. Despite lower yields, the vintage produced smaller berries with intense flavours and optimal tannin quality. With few days over 100°F, the resulting wines boast precise ripeness, rich fruit character, and a harmonious balance that heralds this year as a landmark for the region.

Winemaker team portrait

The Penfolds Team

Key to the success of Penfolds has been a lineage of visionary winemakers. There have only ever been four Chief Winemakers at the helm of Penfolds – Max Schubert, Don Ditter, John Duval and Peter Gago, each a custodian of a rich winemaking tradition that goes back for more than 170 years.

Our current Penfolds winemaking team has more than 100 years between them as Penfolds winemakers. They are constantly refining and improving their work, whilst honouring the winemaking techniques of their predecessors.
