Three varietals dancing 'pas de trois', perfectly integrated and performing in mesmerizing synchronicity. Baking spice, white pepper and Chinese five spices enchant the senses. Sweet notes of rhubarb tart, strawberries, pomegranate, and berry compote provide mouthwatering allure. On the savoury spectrum lurk enticing aromas of Peking Duck with a hint of orange zest.
The palate is generous with plenty of volume yet displays great focus and balance. Sweet flavours of rhubarb, strawberry, and raspberry are complimented by a suggestion of toasted brioche. The gorgeous fruits are complimented by white pepper spice and quartz like mineral acidity. Tannins are rounded and fine, ensuring all the elements stay in formation.
Winter rainfall was slightly above average, providing a solid foundation for spring budburst. October and November were significantly wetter and cooler than average with isolated hail. This did affect flowering and resulted in a reduced yield. Summer was closer to long term average for both rainfall and temperature. The growing season was slow and steady, at least a week later thanaverage, culminating in a late harvest beginning well into March tracking into early May.
Key to the success of Penfolds has been a lineage of visionary winemakers. There have only ever been four Chief Winemakers at the helm of Penfolds – Max Schubert, Don Ditter, John Duval and Peter Gago, each a custodian of a rich winemaking tradition that goes back for more than 170 years.
Our current Penfolds winemaking team has more than 100 years between them as Penfolds winemakers. They are constantly refining and improving their work, whilst honouring the winemaking techniques of their predecessors.
