A bouquet of delicate lavender florals interwoven with exotic green cardamom and fresh fennel bulb. Asiatic lily brings an ethereal touch, grounded by the mineral edge of wet slate. A fragrant invitation to explore further.
Vibrant and flavourful. Fresh lime juice and preserved lemon are first noted. Layers of citrus flavours linger, with a focused acid drive that enlivens the palate. A chalky texture underpins the wine’s structure, delivering a balance of finesse and intensity. The finish is long, clean, and precise, leaving a refreshing impression.
South Australia’s stunning Clare Valley is an enigma. Its ability to produce full-bodied reds and delicately floral Rieslings under a continental climate makes it famous for wines of intensity and balance (its secret is cool afternoon breezes to slow down ripening).
For the second winter in a row, the Clare Valley experienced below-average rainfall. Conditions remained dry through spring and summer. A relatively warm finish to winter continued into the spring growing season, with budburst and flowering well ahead of the long-term average. Vines flourished in the warm weather, with harvest starting approximately four weeks earlier than usual. Polish Hill experienced a significant diurnal temperature difference over summer, which ensured the grapes displayed the aromatics, freshness and bracing acidity that the region is renowned for. The prevailing warm, dry conditions equated to small yields, however, the region was blessed from a quality standpoint.
Key to the success of Penfolds has been a lineage of visionary winemakers. There have only ever been four Chief Winemakers at the helm of Penfolds – Max Schubert, Don Ditter, John Duval and Peter Gago, each a custodian of a rich winemaking tradition that goes back for more than 170 years.
Our current Penfolds winemaking team has more than 100 years between them as Penfolds winemakers. They are constantly refining and improving their work, whilst honouring the winemaking techniques of their predecessors.
