Overview

Overview

Penfolds Cellar Reserve wines are alternative, limited release wines that explore the innovative boundaries of viticulture, vinification and style. Cellar Reserve Tempranillo is sourced exclusively from McLaren Vale and is a unique Australian expression of this Spanish grape variety. Displaying typical fruit characteristics of berries, liquorice, spice and nectar, extended maturation in seasoned French oak has added great complexity to the palate.

Taste Description

Taste Description

Nose

A lovely confluence of varietal and sense of place. First noted, aromas of roast meat – crispy skinned pork seasoned with Portuguese spices. Wafts of charred eggplant, grilled kebabs, pork and fennel sausage, and cured Italian meats. Further inspection reveals dried wildflowers, chamomile, and black oolong tea, anchoring the wines nose with a savoury and herbaceous element. On final note, kalamata olives in brine, brown baking spices and newly tanned leather.

Flavours and Palate

The palate walks in lockstep with the nose. First conjured, dried meats - capocollo, and other assorted Mediterranean charcuterie. Dark chocolate slowly gives way to rum and raisin, providing a dense and generous mid-plate. Exotic flavours of black oolong tea, kalamata olive, fresh fig, cola and spice provide plenty of interest. Fine grain and supportive tannins hold court, while refreshing acidity invigorates.

Map of South Australia

McLaren Vale, South Australia

McLaren Vale lies nestled between the Mt Lofty Ranges and the rolling white sand beaches of Gulf St Vincent. With its warm Mediterranean climate, relaxed coastal ambience and superb local produce, McLaren Vale is a melting pot of food, wine and the arts: the ultimate epicurean destination. The region is renowned for its soft and velvety Shiraz, with pronounced berry, spice and chocolate flavours.

VINTAGE CONDITIONS

McLaren Vale recorded below average winter and spring rainfall, coupled with slightly elevated temperatures. This led to an early budburst, however cooler conditions during September slowed grapevine phenology. Summer was hot and dry with 25 days over 35°C and 7 days over 40°C, which delayed veraison. Milder conditions throughout February gave the vines a chance to recover before another bout of warm weather leading into harvest. Tempranillo performs well in these warm conditions, with the 2019 vintage providing our Winemakers with powerful and concentrated grapes.

Winemaker team portrait

The Penfolds Team

Key to the success of Penfolds has been a lineage of visionary winemakers. There have only ever been four Chief Winemakers at the helm of Penfolds – Max Schubert, Don Ditter, John Duval and Peter Gago, each a custodian of a rich winemaking tradition that goes back for more than 170 years.

Our current Penfolds winemaking team has more than 100 years between them as Penfolds winemakers. They are constantly refining and improving their work, whilst honouring the winemaking techniques of their predecessors.
