Well-regarded since launch, the Koonunga Hill Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the typical cellarability that all Penfolds wines are renowned for. The wine has excellent structure and length and while it is ready for drinking now, it will gain further complexity with short term cellaring.

Awards and Accolades

Awards and Accolades

Cabernet Sauvignon is widely planted across South Australia’s premium wine regions, particularly in the South East where grapes with tremendous structure and aromatics are found. By skillfully blending across these regions, Penfoldshas crafted a Cabernet Sauvignon that is greater than the sum of its parts.

Taste Description

Taste Description

Nose

Undoubtedly cabernet, there is no denying the DNA. Steely graphite, pomegranate liveliness and seared pepper crusted beef. Dried herbs aromatically circle around the varietal cabernet fruit.

Flavours and Palate

White cherries and cranberry follow aromatic pomegranate, bringing an associated succulence that borders on austerity. Fine silky tannins, a steely core, graphite and ferric backbone provides shape. A solid framework for the fruit and tannins to hinge upon.

Map of South Australia

South Australia

Home to the oldest vines in the country, and no less than 18 wine growing regions, South Australia accounts for almost 50% of Australia’s wine production. The Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek and Coonawarra are well known for their world class reds, with Adelaide Hills, Clare Valley and Eden Valley praised for their exceptional Chardonnay and Riesling.

Vintage Conditions

Above-average winter and spring rainfall offered the vines across South Australia healthy soil moisture profiles for the growing season. Cool days and cooler nights slowed vine growth in early spring with temperatures warming in October. Late flowering and veraison delayed harvest by a few weeks. Weather conditions during ripening were generally dry favouring fully ripened grapes with well-developed colours and flavours.

Winemaker team portrait

The Penfolds Team

Key to the success of Penfolds has been a lineage of visionary winemakers. There have only ever been four Chief Winemakers at the helm of Penfolds – Max Schubert, Don Ditter, John Duval and Peter Gago, each a custodian of a rich winemaking tradition that goes back for more than 170 years.

Our current Penfolds winemaking team has more than 100 years between them as Penfolds winemakers. They are constantly refining and improving their work, whilst honouring the winemaking techniques of their predecessors.
