Liquorice and aniseed provide a sweet and spicy edge, accompanied by ripe fig, quince, and sumptuous plum. Hints of clove and cinnamon lend warmth, while vanilla and black pepper- crusted pastrami add complexity and a savoury character. The bouquet is underscored by notes of cedar, incense, and the sweetness of a London bun and marzipan.
Taut and focused, showcasing Cabernet's defined presence. A persistent line of slate, steel, and mineral-like acidity ties the wine's elements together seamlessly. The structure is both textural and refined, with the interplay of Shiraz and Cabernet creating a harmony of savoury and fruit characters.
Home to the oldest vines in the country, and no less than 18 wine growing regions, South Australia accounts for almost 50% of Australia’s wine production. The Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek and Coonawarra are well known for their world class reds, with Adelaide Hills, Clare Valley and Eden Valley praised for their exceptional Chardonnay and Riesling.
The 2023 growing season in South Australia was a year of overcoming climatic challenges, yet the excellent results speak to the skill of our vineyard teams and the dedication of the growers. Winter rainfall was near average. A cooler spring was punctuated by a series of thunderstorms that delayed flowering and fruit set. Conditions improved with the onset of summer and a return to milder weather. Generally, cool weather resulted in a prolonged vintage and slower ripening rates. Well-managed blocks adapted to the conditions, allowing us to harvest Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon well suited to the Koonunga Hill style.
Key to the success of Penfolds has been a lineage of visionary winemakers. There have only ever been four Chief Winemakers at the helm of Penfolds – Max Schubert, Don Ditter, John Duval and Peter Gago, each a custodian of a rich winemaking tradition that goes back for more than 170 years.
Our current Penfolds winemaking team has more than 100 years between them as Penfolds winemakers. They are constantly refining and improving their work, whilst honouring the winemaking techniques of their predecessors.
