Since its inception, Penfolds Koonunga Hill has always aimed to deliver quality, value and consistency. The original 1976 Koonunga Hill Claret is a legendary wine that is still drinking well today. A favourite at Penfolds Re-corking Clinics, collectors value its quality and longevity. Koonunga Hill Shiraz joined the range in 2002, a contemporary reflection of Penfolds multi-regional sourcing philosophy. Shiraz from the warmer districts of South Australia is carefully blended, with the Barossa Valley always well represented.

A primarily fruit driven nose, with lovely notes of raspberries, red cherries, cranberry, and blackcurrants. From the baker, black forest cake, vanilla sponge and hints of dark Dutch cocoa powder. Further inspection reveals spice notes, paprika, turmeric and white pepper with a meaty charcuterie aroma providing further enticement.
Winter rainfall was above average driven by June and July rainfall. August and September rainfall was below average; however, soil moisture profiles were ideal for budburst. South Australia experienced a series of lowpressure systems in late spring resulting in higher-than-average growing season rainfall. The season was generally cool, with conditions delaying harvest by several weeks. The extra hang time allowed the grapes to develop lovely varietal characters.
Key to the success of Penfolds has been a lineage of visionary winemakers. There have only ever been four Chief Winemakers at the helm of Penfolds – Max Schubert, Don Ditter, John Duval and Peter Gago, each a custodian of a rich winemaking tradition that goes back for more than 170 years.
Our current Penfolds winemaking team has more than 100 years between them as Penfolds winemakers. They are constantly refining and improving their work, whilst honouring the winemaking techniques of their predecessors.
