Overview

Overview

RWT stands for ‘Red Winemaking Trial’. No longer a trial, this is a wine that redefines Barossa shiraz at the highest level. Wish your loved ones all kinds of success in the year of the Dragon with the RWT Bin 798 Barossa Valley Shiraz.

RWT Barossa Valley Shiraz presents an admirable alternative to the multi-regional sourcing and American oak maturation that are hallmarks of Grange, expressing instead, single region Barossa Valley shiraz matured only in French oak. Its style is opulent and fleshy, contrasting with Grange, which is more muscular and assertive. RWT is made from fruit primarily selected for its aromatic qualities and lush texture. The result is a wine that helps to redefine Barossa shiraz at the highest quality level.

Andrew Caillard MW

"Deep crimson. Lovely blackberry, dark chocolate, praline aromas with mocha, marzipan, vanilla notes. Beautifully concentrated wine with ample blackberry, dark chocolate, roasted chestnut, marzipan flavours, dense chocolaty tannins, superb mid palate volume and fresh long integrated acidity. Finishes chocolaty with plentiful seductive sweet dark berry fruits and bitte sweet notes. Lovely richness, volume and vinosity. Should develop into a classic Penfoldsian Barossa Shiraz. Drink 2026 – 2045. 98 points."

Ken Gargett

"Sourced from the Barossa, this wine matures in French hogsheads for 14 months, 80% of them new and 20% one-year-old. A cracking red. Dark, almost opaque maroon in colour, there is finesse here. Red fruits, notably raspberries, with florals, cold tea, milk chocolate, hints of cloves and red cherry notes all combine to provide wonderful aromatics. Saturated flavours here, and the wine has elegance. The texture is seductive and layered, ensuring a more refined, more graceful, wine. Bright acidity runs the length, which is seriously impressive. Everything in total harmony. A superb RWT. 14.5% alc – 98 points"

Matthew Jukes

"In 2021 RWT has some spice to break up the familiar avalanche of black fruit, giving it some levity and even a little bounce on the palate. Delicious, lip-smacking, and surprisingly convivial, this Titan has been tamed, and the result is a genuinely enjoyable and somewhat forward wine (within an RWT frame of reference) with uncommon freshness and lift. These traits will serve it well. Drink 2025 - 2045. 14.5% alc – 19 points"

Taste Description

Taste Description

Nose

Sensory theatre – it’s all about the timing:

Arising unabashed: A floral fragrance

Ascending with a swirl: Saturated berried fruits à la glazed and atop Danish pastry avec custard.

Revealed upon sitting: French oak proclaimed via citrus/brine, caper/cedar and sandalwood markers.

Omnipresent: Cured meats embalmed in balsamic, anchovy paste and flowering thyme.

The aromatic stage is set – a distinctive Barossa backdrop with respectful Penfolds lighting.

Flavours and Palate

Dark fruits affording viscosity and concentration.

Quince noted … and a little more (fig/cheese + balsamic?).

Vietnamese mint and anise indulge an admirable palate “cooling effect”/lift. Dusty tannins fused with cocoa chocolate dust.

Structurally confident - a defined backbone, Barossa weight and density.

Vintage Conditions

The 2019 growing season was extremely dry and warm. In the 12 months to March, the region had only 61% of the long-term average rainfall. Spring temperatures were slightly below-average driven by lower minimum temperatures (-2.5°C) including two below 0°C events during September, which resulted in frost events on 4th September and 29th September. Summer was very warm, with December and January well above-average driven by a combination of both higher maximum and minimum temperatures. The Kalimna vineyard experienced 31 days of temperatures exceeding 35°C. While March was also dry, crucially it was not too hot allowing for an orderly harvest. Low yields delivered Barossa Valley shiraz with dark colours, intense depth of flavour and ripe firm tannin structure.

The Penfolds Team

Key to the success of Penfolds has been a lineage of visionary winemakers. There have only ever been four Chief Winemakers at the helm of Penfolds – Max Schubert, Don Ditter, John Duval and Peter Gago, each a custodian of a rich winemaking tradition that goes back for more than 170 years.

Our current Penfolds winemaking team has more than 100 years between them as Penfolds winemakers. They are constantly refining and improving their work, whilst honouring the winemaking techniques of their predecessors.
