Overview

Australian’s love nothing better than a great steak…and they love nothing better to have with their steak than a great bottle of Pepperjack Shiraz. Just as different steak cuts have different flavour, texture and appeal - so do different shirazes. The Pepperjack Graded Collection showcases shiraz made to perfectly match two of our favourite cuts of steak – Scotch Fillet and Porterhouse.

The Pepperjack Graded Langhorne Creek Shiraz was made to partner with Porterhouse steak, inspired by Langhorne Creek's ability as a region to produce wines with fantastic minerality, fine chalky tannins and length of flavour. These qualities also lengthen the flavour of the Porterhouse through the palate.

Rich and bright red in colour with a dark purple rim, the nose shows rich and concentrated red and blue fruits, dark chocolate and hints of spice. The palate is plush with excellent structure. Fine, chalky tannins offer length and power while finishing soft, with a full of flavour.

93 Points - Ray Jordan

"When you speak of Langhorne Creek the first thing you think of is drinkability. The deliciously appealing, soft palates continue to make some of the best wines where ‘value’ and ‘ready to drink’ feature as prominent requirements. This is designed, according to the label, to match with Porterhouse steak. I’d actually drink it with anything. It’s beautiful with a generous smooth palate loaded with medium bodied dark fruits." - Ray Jordan

Langhorne Creek, South Australia

Nestled among gum trees on an ancient flood plain between the Bremer and Angas rivers, Langhorne Creek is one of Australia’s best-kept viticultural secrets. Its deep, alluvial soils and the surprisingly cool influence of nearby Lake Alexandrina produce soft and fragrantly elegant reds with distinctive mintiness.

It was a challenging season with regular, but only light winter rainfall pre-empting a dry late-winter, spring and early summer period. However, the warm dry spring provided superb conditions for flowering and fruit set which was reflected in the good yields across the district. Summer brought cooler weather and some welcome rain at an ideal time. The reliable cooling ‘lake breezes’ provided a long cool ripening period. The mild conditions were ideal for early flavour and phenolic ripeness at lower Baume’s, leading to a generally steady harvest pattern. Early flavour-ripeness, coupled with the ideal weather, provided the opportunity to pick to style without the risk of over-ripe characters.

Richard Mattner - Winemaker

Growing up in the Barossa Valley, winemaker Richard Mattner was never far from wine. His grandfather's vineyard at the highly-regarded Light Pass district was Richard's playground during the school holidays. Upon leaving school, Richard gained employment as a cellar hand and began a career in the wine industry in 1993. Richard was destined to be a winemaker and in 2004 he graduated from Charles Sturt University with Bachelor of Applied Science (Wine Science). Richard says winemaking is an art and just another way of creatively expressing himself. In addition to his passion for red wine, Richard has a keen interest in all things sports and loves nothing more than to relax with friends and enjoy a char-grilled scotch fillet on the barbeque perfectly matched with a bottle of wine, of course.
