Although wine is produced in every state of the country (yes, even Alaska), California dominates the field. Its two most famous regions, Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley, lie next to each other separated by the Mayacamas mountains. From Sparkling wines right through to heavy reds, every major wine varietal and style is accounted for; but it is Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that are most celebrated.
