Overview

Overview

Sourced from the mature, cool climate Drumborg Vineyard in south-west Victoria’s Henty region, our Riesling is part of Seppelt’s iconic Drumborg vineyard range. Planted in 1964 by Karl Seppelt, the Drumborg vineyard is renowned for its cool climate, single vineyard wines which are a reflection of the beauty and purity of this isolated site.

Our 2024 release marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Drumborg vineyard. Riesling was the first variety planted at Drumborg in 1964 and is one of Seppelt’s most sought-after whites due to its purity, intensity of flavour and remarkable cellaring potential. Traditional winemaking techniques including cool tank fermentation followed by a short period of maturation on lees are used to bring about the truest expression of the vineyard.

Jeni Port

"What a fitting, beautifully aromatic wine to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the planting of the Drumborg vineyard! The decision to plant Riesling in the ultra-cool Drumborg district all those decades ago was truly ahead of its time and has been rewarded year after year with a wine that celebrates the heady, floral aromatics of the variety, while also rewarding substantial cellaring. Spring flowers, so engaging, with the lifted scent of wildflowers, citrus blossom, apple, lemon, lime and grapefruit zest beckons from the glass. Against a strong core of lime, lemon and Delicious apple and with just a hint of Asian fruits, the wine lights up in bright, zingy acidity . . . just like sucking on a Mayer lemon with great balance throughout. A fine Riesling by any measure. 96 Points."

Ray Jordan

"This is the 60th anniversary of the planting of this famous site which seems to be just north of the south pole. It’s a cool climate site, okay. The aroma is immediately up and about with a lemon zest, lime and tart pear combination so compelling and engaging. It’s typically racy with a high tensile mouth feel from that natural acidity and edgy minerality which is part of the vineyard influence. A small amount of lees influence has added a nice textural feel to set off the keen acidity. 95 Points."

Fragrant notes of kaffir lime, lemon blossom, poached pear and a hint of perfumed bath salts.

Incredible intensity of flavour along the length; notes of lemon peel alongside kaffir lime, starfruit and spice hint at an exotic spectrum of flavours. The textural, mineral mouthfeel adds flesh to the juicy acid backbone.

Viticulture Vintage & Winemaking

Henty, Victoria

Henty is one of the coolest wine regions of Australia but is protected by a maritime influence. Famed for being the home of cool climate viticulture and the iconic Drumborg vineyard, Henty is renowned for its Rieslings, Chardonnays and Sparklings.

VINTAGE CONDITIONS

Another wet Drumborg winter coupled with a consistently wet and cold spring delayed flowering and resulted in poor fruit set across the vineyard. The growing season however was unseasonably warm and dry allowing for careful selection of the picking windows of fruit without the omnipresent pressure of rain. The resulting wine is of excellent quality.
