Founded in 1851, Seppelt is one of Australia’s most historic wine producers, known for its pioneering role in shaping cool-climate winemaking and for creating the iconic Sparkling Shiraz. Drawing from vineyards across the Grampians, Henty, and Heathcote, Seppelt crafts wines that reflect the character and complexity of each region.
The Mt Ida vineyard, planted in 1975 on the slopes of an extinct volcano, is a standout site in Heathcote. Dry-grown on ancient Cambrian soils, it yields fruit of remarkable intensity and structure. Produced only in exceptional vintages, the 2023 Mt Ida Shiraz offers concentrated dark fruit, layered spice, and the distinctive savoury tannins that define this terroir.
This limited release embodies Seppelt’s enduring philosophy: to honour place, challenge convention, and craft wines of depth and distinction.

Rich dark chocolate notes, plum and nougat oak layered with earthy spice and ferrous elements.
On the nose, a rich, dense front palate with lashings of dark cocoa, blackberry and blood plum. The luscious front palate complements its long, textural and gravelly tannin structure, a regional hallmark of Heathcote Shiraz. The granitic tannins pull the palate along, creating a long ferrous and svelte finish.
Australia’s second smallest state is home to more regions and wineries than any other. A mix of cool and warm regions means variety is the spice of life in Victoria – from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula, to rich Shiraz from Heathcote and the Grampians and world famous fortified wines from Rutherglen, it’s a paradise for wine lovers.
The Mt Ida vineyard experienced a cooler and wetter than normal season with rainfall significantly above the long-term average. Wet conditions meant canopy growth and disease pressure needed to be carefully managed. The dry grown Mt Ida block was fruit thinned accordingly to ensure balanced growth in tough conditions and this work resulted in excellent quality in the resulting wine in what had the potential to be a difficult season.
Growing up on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, Clare has had a long-held interest in the world of wine. Completing a Bachelor of Oenology from the University of Adelaide, Clare worked for many wineries and vineyards back in Mornington and overseas in Germany before joining Wolf Blass in 2007 as a vintage winemaker. Over the next 13 years, Clare has honed her skillset, crafting wines across varieties in both red and white wine production, while also participating in extensive wine judging. Most recently, Clare has been instrumental in crafting premium Chardonnay, a variety she greatly enjoys.
