A rich, distinctive nose defined by layers of blackberry, blackcurrant and dark plum is backed up with deep notes of espresso coffee, panforte and hints of tobacco. Smoky, toasted-nut characters, derived from barrel fermentation and maturation, add attractive complexity.
The palate is complex, mouth-filling and beautifully balanced, with refined yet generous dark berry fruit, and savoury secondary flavours of spice, coffee and cedary oak. Rich and elegant, with a velvety texture and supple, chocolatey tannins that impart a definitive structural line and exceptional length of flavour. The vintage is typical of the characteristic Black Label style that overrides regional and varietal influences.
Home to the oldest vines in the country, and no less than 18 wine growing regions, South Australia accounts for almost 50% of Australia’s wine production. The Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek and Coonawarra are well known for their world class reds, with Adelaide Hills, Clare Valley and Eden Valley praised for their exceptional Chardonnay and Riesling.
The 2022 season had a mild summer without heatwave conditions. January and February 2022 recorded no days above 40°C. The mild summer was followed by a warm autumn. This produced a gentle and slow ripening period and delayed harvest. Vintage 2022 had late Veraison colour change, and correspondingly a later harvest date. Grape picking took 9 weeks to complete starting at full pace in the first week of March and ending in the end of April. Overall Vintage 2022 ranks right up there for quality. Reds have intense, rich and balanced flavours and colours.
The Wolf Blass team of winemakers share a similar working ethos – to boldly chase the pursuit of excellence, to uphold and represent Wolf Blass' proud history, and to create wine of exceptional quality.
