Overview

Overview

Each vintage Wynns select a premium parcel from a single vineyard to bottle separately. This year the selection is from the Glengyle vineyard just north of V&A Lane.

Glengyle is a fragment of John Riddoch’s original block 474. It was planted on own roots with pre-clonal Cabernet Sauvignon in 1969 and is now renowned as an early ripening vineyard in the hear of the Terra Rossa soil.

Glengyle has been selected as a single vineyard release in 2007, 2009 and now in 2021. In the three vintages selected for release, the growing season temperature was average with low rainfall, and the grapes were amongst the earliest harvested Cabernet of the season.

Campbell Mattinson | Wine Companion

"A single-vineyard cabernet from vines planted in 1969. Matured in 30% new French oak. It's not a monumental wine, in size terms, but it's monumentally beautiful. It makes power look easy; it takes quality in its stride. Blackcurrant and redcurrant flavours come infused with the most fragrant and beguiling of tobacco and herbs characters, all of which are wrapped in a velvety over-shirt of cedary oak. It's classically styled and classically long; the sweetness of the fruit, matched to all those savoury herb notes, is really something to be behold, as is the length, as is the intricacy of the tannin."

Andrew Caillard MW

"Deep crimson. Fragrant violet, pure cassis aromas with hints of dark chocolate. Expressive wine with blackcurrant, Parma violet, touch cedar flavours, fine grainy/ al dente and sinuous tannins, attractive density and well-balanced marzipan, roasted chestnut oak notes and fresh crisp acidity. Finishes sinewy with bittersweet cacao notes. Delicious minerally wine with seductive pure cassis notes. Drink now – 2034 95 points"

"Each year, the team at Wynns select a single vineyard from which to make a Cabernet. 2021 was a fine vintage with low rainfall and an early harvest. In previous years with similar conditions, it is the Glengyle Vineyard, just north of V&A Lane, if you know your Coonawarra, which has been selected and so it was again. This vineyard is a small fragment of the vineyard, block 474, the original vines planted by John Riddoch on this plot although they are lost now. In 1969, it was re-planted with pre-clonal Cabernet on its own roots. Opaque maroon, the nose gives us notes of spices, tobacco leaves, blackcurrants, aniseed, mint and chocolate. Excellent focus, really good length, good acidity and silky tannins, it is seamless and with a creamy texture. It is delightfully fresh, but it is undoubtedly built for the long haul. With fine oak integration, this is already approachable, but will surely drink beautifully for the next ten to fifteen years."

Nose

Dusty cocoa, dill and brambly notes meshing with red berries.

Flavours and Palate

The flavours are beautifully fresh, echoing crunchy red berries and intriguing gentle florals. This wine is finely polished and focused in structure, with great persistence and intensity giving the impression of a wine that is layered, flowing and building all at once. A true wine of stature.

Coonawarra, South Australia

Coonawarra, on South Australia’s Limestone Coast, is a flat, isolated region almost mid-point between Adelaide and Melbourne. The area enjoys a cool maritime climate - similar to that of Bordeaux - and is renowned for its unique terra rossa soil. Rich, rust coloured soils… crimson sunburnt faces… magenta sunsets: this is red wine country! While Coonawarra is famous for its rich, minty Cabernet, the area also produces Shiraz and Merlot and surprisingly good Chardonnay and Riesling.

Sue Hodder - Senior Winemaker

Sue Hodder is one of Australia’s best-known winemakers and this year celebrates her 27th vintage with Wynns – making wine from wonderful, expressive fruit grown in the heart of the terra rossa. Sue commenced her career as a viticulturist and believes her early viticultural training – assessing vines, analysing mature fruit and tasting the finished wine – gave her an invaluable insight into the importance of the vineyard in quality winemaking.

Sue brings valuable experience with vintages in other noted wine regions around the world and has judged extensively in Regional, National and International wine shows. She is the recipient of many accolades including GT Wines ‘Winemaker of the Year’ in 2010 (with viticulturist Allen Jenkins); and most recently ‘Winemaker of the Year’ (with Sarah Pidgeon) at the 2016 ASVO awards.
