Overview

Overview

The Cabernet vineyards from V&A Lane have long been looked to for their depth and character as important contributors to Wynns top wines. The inspiration for the V&A Lane Cabernet Shiraz comes from the Wynns ‘claret story’ that goes back to the 1950s, where wines were made to a style rather than being about exact proportions. For this modern version, the grapes are harvested on the same day and then co-fermented.

The purpose of V&A Lane wines is to showcase a contrasting wine style from our two most beloved grape varieties. A purposely early harvest to highlight a fresh red fruit spectrum, naturally lower alcohol, wild ferments, and the use of larger oak for maturation are just some of the techniques employed to make these beautiful food friendly wines.

"Medium deep crimson. Attractive blackcurrant, blackberry, elderberry, dark chocolate aromas with herb garden, hint leafy notes. Well concentrated blackberry, cassis fruits, fine cedar, touch leafy tannins and well-integrated savoury notes. Finishes grippy firm and long with bittersweet chocolaty notes. 12.8% alc Drink 2024 – 2034 94 points"

"Many will recall the days of the Wynns Claret, long consigned to the dustbin of history, but still able to revive memories through this wine. As Wynns says, those wines were made to a style rather than being about exact proportions. Today, the grapes are co-fermented with the intent of bringing about a red-fruit dominant style, a little more elegant than many. Job done! Vibrant yet opaque purple. We have earthy notes with a mix of mulberries, redcurrants and blackberries. There are also hints of chocolate, spices and coffee beans with finely integrated oak. Good balance and silky tannins, though there is some serious grip. Impressive length and, just on the finish, a tiny flick of a bitter coffee notes, which tie the wine together nicely. Drink over the next 8 to 10 years."

Taste Description

Taste Description

Nose

There are red apple blossoms, mulberry, raspberry and white pepper notes. A pleasant dusty spice and a hint of bay leaf gives an overall harmony and restraint to the aromas..

Flavours and Palate

Co-fermentation of the two varieties creates a layered and harmonious style, with unique tannin structure. There is a weightless feel to the palate without compromise to intensity. A mix of forest berries, black tea and aniseed plays on the palate. The texture is lightly powdery and persistent, with the gentle tannins adding length. All this meshes beautifully with perfectly balanced acidity ensuring a seamless fresh note in the wine right to the end.

Coonawarra, South Australia

Coonawarra, on South Australia’s Limestone Coast, is a flat, isolated region almost mid-point between Adelaide and Melbourne. The area enjoys a cool maritime climate - similar to that of Bordeaux - and is renowned for its unique terra rossa soil. Rich, rust coloured soils… crimson sunburnt faces… magenta sunsets: this is red wine country! While Coonawarra is famous for its rich, minty Cabernet, the area also produces Shiraz and Merlot and surprisingly good Chardonnay and Riesling.

Sarah Pidgeon - Winemaker

In 1998 Sarah was appointed winemaker at the renowned Wynns Coonawarra Estate winery. Here she feels privileged to continue the tradition of excellence and innovation, working with fruit from some of Australia’s top vineyards on the internationally famed terra rossa soil.
A love of well cellared, mature wines has been cultivated through her custodianship of the precious Wynns Museum Release wines. An intense knowledge of the terroir of Coonawarra vineyards, and great skill with coaxing the best from old vine Cabernets are among her constant rewards.
Questioning and challenging are important to ensuring a healthy future for Wynns and to this end Sarah has contributed to many important trials including development of a rigorous oak selection programme, and other technical trials for the winery.
A graduate of the prestigious Len Evans Wine Tutorial, her recent judging experience spans a decade at both regional and national shows.
