Overview

V&A Lane is a long, straight road that dissects Coonawarra’s famous terra rossa strip at its midpoint. Surveyed in 1851, the lane divides the original electorates of Victoria and Albert, and the area is celebrated for exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz wines.

“V&A Lane is an important, historic vineyard but it was only in '08 that Wynns started making two V&A Lane wines, a cabernet shiraz and shiraz. The V&A story is all about fineness, grace and beauty, but there is an underlying power, too. Oozes class from this outstanding vintage with black currants, mulberry, cinnamon, crushed violets and faint notes of the Aussie bush. Skimming the depths that it has yet to reach but, nevertheless, mighty fine drinking in its youth.” Jeni Port, Halliday Wine Companion
“Silky texture, spritely red of freshness and levity. Red berry and red plummy fruit, white pepper, salt bush, new leather scents and flavours meshed beautifully. Long and lithe, rolls with a gentle sweetness, slightly creamy in a way, finishes with a smudge and gentle chew of the characteristically fine tannin. Such a pleasure. Luxurious and sleek shiraz wine here.” Mike Beanie
"Medium deep crimson. Intense raspberry blueberry chinotto herb garden aromas with espresso notes. Medium-powered elegantly style with pure raspberry blueberry cola herb garden flavours, underlying savoury notes and fine sinuous tannins. Finishes minerally, chalky firm and long. Should build more richness and volume with age. Very much a retro modern style with fascinating potential for cellaring. 12.4% alc – 2022 – 2030." Andrew Caillard MW

Flavours and Palate

Bright cherry and blueberry complements more savoury elements of stalks, pastry, and spice. Cloudlike tannin gives an expansive tone, and guides the pure fruits though to the lingering crushed pepper and cinnamon on the finish. This is an early ripening, early harvested wine. The resulting freshness and brightness with moderate alcohol but many layers of flavour has become a signature of the V&A Lane.

Coonawarra, South Australia

Coonawarra, on South Australia’s Limestone Coast, is a flat, isolated region almost mid-point between Adelaide and Melbourne. The area enjoys a cool maritime climate - similar to that of Bordeaux - and is renowned for its unique terra rossa soil. Rich, rust coloured soils… crimson sunburnt faces… magenta sunsets: this is red wine country! While Coonawarra is famous for its rich, minty Cabernet, the area also produces Shiraz and Merlot and surprisingly good Chardonnay and Riesling.

Vintage Conditions

2018 is a vintage that shows the quality of shiraz from the best vineyard sites. Wynns 2018 Shiraz is spicy, silky and medium bodied. Winter and Spring rainfall was excellent at 20% above long- term averages, soil moisture was replenished, and limestone aquifers recharged. Warm Summer temperatures advanced early ripening by two weeks. However, a strong coastal upwelling cooled March, and extended the ripening period so that picking was around long- term average. The Cool finish was ideal for acid retention and freshness.
