One of the original varieties planted in Australia, Grenache thrives in McLaren Vale and Barossa Valley where it is a component of GSM with Shiraz and Mourvèdre. It is famous in Spain, where it is called Garnacha, and the Rhone Valley in France, where it is often blended. Raspberry, plum, and tobacco are common tasting notes, along with a plush mouthfeel that contributes to its ‘crowd pleasing’ reputation. Grenache’s single varietal style, however, can be hard to pin down. Depending on the region and the winemaker, it can resemble the light elegance of Pinot Noir or the robust richness of Shiraz.
