On a long, thin strip of land in the very southern reaches of South Australia, a vibrantly red soil known as terra rossa makes its mark on the local landscape. This is Coonawarra, where in 1891 pastoralist John Riddoch saw its potential for grape growing, and in 1951, winemaker Samuel Wynn dusted off the languishing vineyards. Wynns Coonawarra Estate was born.

The first Wynns Cabernet was produced in 1954 and today is still equal to the world’s best. The iconic Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon is one of Australia’s most collected wines, and the flagship John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon has been classed as ‘Exceptional’ in the Langton’s Classification of Australian Wine. Wynns also produces exceptional Shiraz, Chardonnay, Riesling and a Rosé made from Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2021 Wynnsday Release

Introducing the Wynns 2021 Collection Release, comprised of seven special wines from the lauded 2018 and 2019 vintages.

The release is led by the impressive 99-point 2018 John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon, only made in high-quality vintages from the very best parcels. The 98-point 2018 Michael Shiraz vintage also makes a welcome comeback.

The 2019 Black Label wines are also shaping up to be exemplary of the range and the 2021 release is rounded out by the single-vineyard Johnson’s Block Cabernet Sauvignon 2018, made from some of the oldest Cabernet vines in Coonawarra.

Meet the Maker

Sue Hodder is one of Australia’s best-known and revered winemakers. She has nearly three decades of experience at Wynns, making wine from the wonderful, expressive fruit grown in the heart of the terra rossa. Sue has worked with winemaker Sarah Pidgeon for 20 years, and together the pair won ASVO Winemaker of the Year in 2016.

In 2010, Sue was also awarded the Gourmet Traveller WINE Winemaker of the year alongside long-serving viticulturalist Allen Jenkins. The strong symbiotic relationship between the vineyard and the winery has been the backbone of Wynns ongoing quality and success.

“The two vintages in the Collection – 2018 and 2019 – are as strong a pair as I have seen in my three decades at Wynns. Each of the collection wines individually epitomises our classic house style.”
